There is a Green Hill Far Away

A favorite of the BYU Young Ambassadors, this arrangement is one of composer Garrett Breeze’s best known works.  It was commissioned by director Randy Boothe for the fireside “I Believe in Christ” which toured the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and Hong Kong.  It was then recorded by Dr. Ronald Staehli as part of the BYU Singers Alumni Hymn Project and released as a free digital download (available at www.singersalumni.com).  The arrangement’s most unique feature (its setting in 5/4 time) is also its most challenging, however this quickly becomes natural and adds a beautiful expressive quality to the familiar tune.

*Performance Note: Although not ideal, if the TTBB divisi in the third verse is problematic, the baritone and bass parts may be omitted.  Alternatively, this part could be sung by a featured quartet on microphone, thus reducing the rehearsal time needed to learn the piece.
